A hot tub is a large purchase with running costs, so it is worth being clear about what you actually get for the money before you shop.
Reasons people buy
- Somewhere to unwind. Warm water at the end of the day is the single most common reason our customers give.
- Time with people. A 5- or 6-seat spa is a social space; a 2-seat spa is a private one. Decide which you are buying.
- Use of outdoor space year round. A well-insulated spa is usable in winter, which is when most owners use it most.
- Warm-water soaking after exercise. Many people find it comfortable after physical activity. We make no medical claims — if you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take medication, speak to your doctor before using a hot tub.
Reasons to think twice
- Running costs. Budget for electricity, chemicals, filters and an occasional cover replacement.
- Site work. Electric spas usually need a level, load-bearing pad and a 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Wood-fired tubs avoid the wiring but need fuel and manual filling.
- Maintenance time. Ten to fifteen minutes a week of water testing and dosing is realistic.
- Delivery is curbside. Ours arrives at the end of your driveway on a lift-gate truck for a flat $200 anywhere in the contiguous U.S.; getting it into position is on you or your installer.
A sensible way to decide
Work out where the spa will sit, how many people will realistically be in it, and what your electrician quotes for the circuit. If those three answers are comfortable, the model choice is the easy part.
